Ion Property Developments and Wirral Council are working together to transform an unloved vacant industrial site, positioned between Birkenhead Central and Green Lane railway stations, into Borough Yard, a 32 acre green urban village.
Over the next 15 years, this former industrial site will be transformed into a community of 1,600 low carbon homes, purposefully designed for people from all walks of life. Borough Yard will be connected by biodiverse green spaces and squares, streets focused on people rather than cars, a primary school, amenities such as offices, shops, cafes, nursery and care services, a hotel, and a mobility hub providing parking and parcel drop-off services.
This new sustainable neighbourhood benefits from a unique setting within the historic walls of the former railway and gasworks yards; and running along it’s length is the currently derelict Dock Branch South railway line, which is being transformed into a new public park.
The project is underpinned by four simple rules that represent Borough Yard’s core ambition, which is to improve the lives of both new and existing Birkenhead residents. The Borough Yard rules will guide the design and development of each phase.
